Jane Powell Crowder, 89, of Greenville, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving
family and friends at home on Monday, June 10, 2024.
Born in Greenville, SC, she was the eldest daughter of the late Harry Heyward and Mary Bell Powell.
Jane attended and graduated from Greenville High School, where she was elected 'Miss High Miss,' before continuing her education at Converse College, where she was the president of both her junior and senior classes. In 1997 she was awarded the 'Converse 100' award by her alma mater, a prestigious commendation of her character.
She was a lady through and through - well-dressed, done-up, eager to chat, quick to cry, and not without a flair for the theatrical - and one of the warmest and most caring you'll ever meet.
Her datebooks were always overflowing with birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, Daughters of the American Revolution meetings (she was a proud member of the Greenville chapter), gatherings with her treasured "Lunch Bunch," and the daily business of her many family and friends. She was a joy, a hoot, a bit of a gossip, and an unwavering source of love and support for all who knew her.
As a teacher at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind for nearly forty years, she gave away her love and infectious smile freely, passionately, and patiently to generations of students and families in her community. She was a dedicated member of Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, and a proud patron of the arts, even when her children and grandchildren weren't performing.
The memory of Jane - or "Flash" or "Dash," as she was affectionately nicknamed - will forever be cherished in the hearts of her children, Laura Crowder Peace and husband Johnny, and Benjamin Crowder, III; her five adoring grandchildren, Rad Mitchell and wife, Kellie, Mary Jane Mitchell Bowden and husband, Brady, Marshall, Stella Jane, and Ellison Peace; three precious great grandsons; and her loving sister, Annelle Powell Locke and husband, Dick.
She is reunited in Heaven with her daughter, Julie Crowder Mitchell.
The family would also like to thank Barb Sanders, Augie Mitchell, and Shonda Chapman for the care they showed her.
A funeral service to celebrate Jane's life was held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal Markley Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind by visiting http://www.scsdbfoundation.org, or to the charity of your choice.
