Thomas M. “Chip” Simmons, 72, of Greenville, SC, passed away on September 8, 2024. A man of many talents, adventures, and a heart full of joy, Chip will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Chip is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Sue Simmons, and their son, Neil West Simmons.

He also leaves behind his siblings, Joy A. Simmons, Bob Simmons, and Jean Day. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William West Simmons and Ruth Simmons, as well as his brother Richard Simmons.

Chip lived a vibrant life defined by creativity, curiosity, and adventure. His lifelong passion for photography earned him recognition as an award- winning artist, with his work proudly displayed in local businesses. As a published author, his book The Lighted Sword is a testament to his love for storytelling and expression through the written word. His connection to nature was profound, and through his leadership with the Sierra Club, he organized and led hundreds of outdoor adventures — hiking, canoeing, camping, and more. His love for the outdoors inspired countless people, leaving a lasting impact on those who ventured into nature alongside him.

An adventurer at heart, Chip embraced wanderlust, traveling with his family across the U.S. and beyond. From hiking and kayaking to camping and biking, he was a lover of life’s many journeys. He was also an accomplished pilot, learning to fly even before he had his driver’s license.

Despite his many accomplishments, Chip was known for his warmth, generosity, and infectious sense of fun. He had the rare gift of striking up a conversation with a stranger and leaving as friends. Chip’s joy and sense of humor were constants in his life, traits that he lovingly passed on to his son, Neil, and shared with all who knew him. He also served his country proudly in the United States Army.

In addition to his talents, Chip was a lifelong learner with a spirit that never tired of exploration, whether it was through the stars with his passion for astronomy, or by learning new instruments like piano and guitar. Above all, he cherished his role as a loving husband and father, always making time for the people who mattered most.

Chip will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. His legacy of adventure, creativity, and love for life will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
